What do the circular symbols with letters stand for?

We created easy-to-spot symbols that tell you what's most important about each of our products at a glance. You can see which products are organic, gluten-free, vegan, wheat-free, and more. Learn more about each symbol.

What does vegan mean?

Vegans (pronounced VEE-guns) do not eat animal products and by-products such as eggs and dairy products. Vegans also do not eat fish and in some cases honey. Vegans should eat a variety of foods including whole grains, beans and nuts to replace the proteins in meat, milk and eggs. Adding any of our delicious organic, yeast free and vegan breads will help do the trick. French Meadow Bakery™ is proud to offer a tantalizing range of bakery items to the vegan community.

What is Kamut® Khorasan wheat flour?

This ancient flour is made from the ancient durum wheat relative called Kamut® Khorasan wheat grain. When you incorporate our deliciously satisfying Organic Kamut® Bread into your diet, you’ll be enjoying the benefits of bread that contains protein, amino acids and minerals. Kamut® Khorasan wheat can often be tolerated by people who are sensitive to wheat or who have wheat allergies. But remember, if your allergies or sensitivities to wheat are severe, you should always check with a doctor before trying it.

Why do you make breads with spelt?

The answer is simple: sometimes the original way is still the best. Spelt is an ancient grain in the wheat family, popular in Europe for centuries, and it is even referred to in the Bible. We make our popular spelt breads and bagels because of the nutritional value of spelt and its deliciously nutty taste. Spelt is extremely water soluble, and is a source of B vitamins and protein. Because of spelt's water solubility, it's more easily digested. Enjoy our whole line of delicious spelt products.

What are CoroWise™ plant sterols?

All plants include some amount of a substance known as plant sterols that naturally reduce cholesterol. However it is difficult to consume enough of these foods on a daily basis to derive enough plant sterols to create a cholesterol-lowering effect. CoroWise™ plant sterols is a concentrated extract of this substance that comes from plants such as soybeans or corn.

Where can I buy your products?

Our products are found in many stores, often times in the frozen section, throughout the country such as Whole Foods, Natural Food Stores, Co-ops, etc.  You can also use our store locator found on our website and search by zipcode for stores in your area. Most of our products are also available to order online.

What is the expiration date? What is a julian code?

All of our products have a production date (julian code – 4 digit number found on the plastic quick lok tab that closes the bag) on them and since different stores store the breads in different ways (frozen, refrigerated, ambient) there are three different shelf lives.  We urge stores to put a “best buy” sticker on the bread if they are going to store it in the refrigerator or on the shelf so that the customer knows how long it has been out. Our bread, bagel and tortilla products have a 9 month frozen, 21 day refrigerated and 5 day (bread and bagels only) ambient shelf life.  The julian code stands for the following: 9014 – 9 stands for 2009, 014 stands for the day of the year (out of 365) which would translate to January 14, 2009 was the day that the bread was produced.

Is this a sourdough bread? Is this bread yeast-free?

The majority of our products are made using the traditional sourdough method. We use a sourdough starter, which is what causes the breads to rise without adding any baker’s yeast. Look for the Yeast-free seal.
